About This Game

Set several years after the end of Risen, raging titans have devastated the world and pushed humanity to the brink of existence. Subsequently, monstrous creatures have risen from the watery depths of the sea and their attacks have brought all seafaring to a grinding halt. The hero, now a member of the Inquisition, is sent out to find out how to stop the chaos caused by these creatures from the deep. His quest begins with rumors that the pirates who frequent the southern islands are the only ones who know a way to get rid of the creatures once and for all and end their reign of terror.

With an all-new pirate-based theme, Risen 2: Dark Waters aims to combine the most loved classic RPG gameplay mechanics of the original Risen with a fresh theme and setting on a huge variety of themed island locales. A third-person role-playing game set in a dark and gritty universe, Risen 2: Dark Waters maintains the most immersive features of the original Risen, with multiple approaches to every challenge allowing players to shape the game world based on their own decisions. These choices will serve to unlock new paths, features and additional skills for the character. Together with a highly interactive environment and a full day/night-cycle affecting countless aspects of the game world, Risen 2 will be set in the most immersive RPG game world so far. b4d347fde0

AYE AYE CAPTAIN
+It's like gothic
-You can't shag Patty. The devs managed to actually take away all the enjoyable things in original Risen's combat while also making all it's issues much more severe and prevalent making it a hot pile of garbage. (guns are op, swordplay sucks and you can infinitely heal yourself with potions that don't even have an animation to stop you abusing them)
If you like balance this is definitely not the game for you
The story except for a few brilliant moments is as good as your usual arpg stuff.
Character progression is pretty basic.
Graphics are ok I guess, except for a few bugs.
Overall a 5/10 average rpg game. Plenty of better stuff to play out there. Coming directly from earlier piranha bytes-games such as the excellent gothic 2 and the great Risen 1, the difference is stunning.
Gone is the myriad of weapons such as different swords, axes, hammers, staffs, bows, crossbows and magic.
Now there's only sabres, firearms and a few throwing weapons.
As a huge fan of earlier titles, I felt alienated by the restricted variety and massive focus on the pirate-theme.
It's as if the developers sat down and watched pirates of the caribbean and went straight to the drawing-board with newfound vision.
Needless to say it didn't sit well with me.
After playing the first game through several times and loving each minute of it, I came to realize that I needed to treat Risen 2 as its own game.
The Gothic games and Risen 1 are closely related in terms of combat, setting, music, weapons and items.
All of this is changed in Risen 2, and not necessarily for the better, in my opinion.
Sure, the graphics are better, but that comes with the time of release, and doesn't save the game from its flaws.
However, I really liked the constant hunger for gold, which forces you to explore for treasures and take quests.
You need this gold to increase your skills, as well as getting new weapons and equipment, and everything is incredibly expensive.
Overall, this game feels inferior to every previous piranha bytes title.

Toss in some frustrating mechanics, a few quest-related bugs and the limited weapons and this game fails to even approach my expectations coming out of the previous title.. Stated simply, Risen 2: Dark Waters is an extremely rewarding, alternately frustrating and elating roleplaying game.

There's an undefinable quality to the Risen games, I've stated this in the review of the first Risen Game. The game doesn't bend over backwards to hold your hand, it challenges but rewards the player consistently. NPCs are interesting, colorful, but not terribly deep. That being said, the game does several things right. Actually, not only do they get it right but they nail it.

They absolutely nail immersion. The music is sweeping, from quiet moments to the middle of combat. The voice actors are fantastic, giving a great feel to the world. One particular instance had my character trying to mediate an argument between two pirates. The word ♥♥♥♥ was exchanged a record amount of times. Most games don't manage to actually laugh out loud, but this one did.

Visuals are great. They aren't fantastic, not necessarily breathtaking, but the art style and use of environment is spot on.

The way the do character development is interesting, and in my opinion well done. "Experience Points" are represented by a resource called Glory, which is then used to upgrade base stats. These include Bladeworks, Firearms, Voodoo, Cunning, and Toughness. It's possible I missed one, but the point is that increasing these stats then allows you to visit various trainer NPCs that allow you to purchase different abilities with gold and a prerequisite stat ranking. I really enjoyed this approach to a roleplaying game. It sounds laborious and unnecessary, but it does lend a good deal of immersion into the game world.

Murdering monkeys, slaughtering warthogs, dicking pirates all up and down and stealing their stuff. It's great! Also pirates.

It's pirate themed. To me initially that sounded fun but viewing it long term I thought it might get old. Somehow, the developers manged to keep me engaged and immersed in this fantasy pirate world.
